As a huge fan of the Darksiders Franchise, I decided to model something similar to their style that I felt would be fitting in a game. I first picked out my concept, and then used my imagination to expand on it a bit. Blocking out was done in Maya, then I moved on into Zbrush for sculpting. As pictured, sculpting the skull and wheels were by far the most fun and challenging parts of the sculpt. I used Orb Brushes and some rock brushes made by JonasDigitalArt to help with some of the repetitive parts. I then did my retopology (polycount 32,485), and uvs, then handpainted and used a stylized smart material I made for most of the assets in Substance Painter. I wanted to test the limits of this project, so I then rendered out of Unreal for the first time. I think the lighting was the toughest part for me, but I got some valuable feedback from my former teacher, Simon Warwick, on it. I asked my friend, Jon Tuttle, to make the VFX parts for me (fire, lava, smoke, and embers) and then placed them in my scene. I also put some heat wave distortion in to give it more of a fiery, volcanic feel. I tried to get a good feel for composition on this piece, and did some post processing on the renders in GIMP. Overall, this was a super engaging and exciting piece to work on and can't wait to keep working on more stylized environment in the future! Concept by Baldi Konijn. I am in no way affiliated with making the Darksiders games, this is just a fan art piece.
